Curb appeal is important to a home’s value, but that’s not the only reason it’s important. A house with good curb appeal will make you happy and proud every time you arrive back home after a long day at work. It’ll also help keep your relationships with your neighbors positive, especially if any of them are trying to sell their homes and want to get good prices for them.

So how can you improve your home’s curb appeal without spending thousands of dollars on it? In the years I’ve spent flipping houses, I’ve learned quite a few fun and easy ways to work visual miracles with just about any house.

Paint the Front Door and/or the Trim

You don’t have to give the whole house a new coat of paint. Instead, you can just paint the front door a fun, complementary color. And then you can give your trim and/or shutters a new coat of paint to spruce them up and make them really pop. Doing this will do wonders for how your house appears at a glance when people drive or walk by.

Install Cool House Numbers

Whether they’re on your front door or on an exterior, street-facing wall, you can make life easier for delivery drivers, and create a more attractive look for your home if you upgrade your house numbers. Choose a set of numbers that will match your home’s exterior and stand out enough to be visible from the street. As far as materials go, there are a lot of choices out there. You can go with wood, copper, bronze, stainless steel, or painted numbers that match your home’s trim.

Upgrade Your Outdoor Lights

Upgrading your porch light fixtures is an easy way to add value and curb appeal without spending a ton of money. As you choose the best fixtures, think about the color and style of your home, as well as the function of the lights. You want lights that will illuminate the porch and the front of the house at night for safety, but you might not want floodlights that blind visitors as they approach.

Never Underestimate the Power of a Pretty Mailbox

Your mailbox is the first thing that a lot of people will see as they walk or drive past your house. If it’s dented, rusted, and sitting on a dry-rotted post, it’s not going to instill a lot of confidence in the rest of your home. So, if you’re looking for a quick fix that’ll give your curb appeal a real boost, upgrading your mailbox is the way to go.

And, if you want to make more of a statement, plant a few flowers or some decorative grass around the mailbox base. This little detail will make your mailbox look like more than a post in the ground, and it’ll make it look like you care more about the appearance of your home.

Pressure Wash Everything

Don’t get too carried away with pressure washing, but you might be surprised at how much better your front walk, the wood of your porch, and even your vinyl siding can look with a good pressure washing. Rent a pressure washer and see how much nicer you can make your home look in just an afternoon.

These are just a few of the many ways you can spruce up your home and front yard to create a more welcoming look with tons of curb appeal. Whether or not you’re planning on selling anytime soon, try out one or more of these and see how much prouder you can be of your home.
